Transferring photographs and drawings onto wax is quick and easy, and gives a beautifully rustic effect. I’ll show you several methods of making transfers, many of which use inexpensive art products you probably already have in your studio.
I’ll also show you how to transfer drawings and tracings directly onto your wax with some of my favorite materials including graphite, pastels and colored transfer papers. With some practice you can even overlap several transfers between layers of wax.
If you learned transfers even a year ago you’ll be especially interesting in a new transfer paper I’ve just started working with. If you remember those old rub on letters, this works a lot like that so there are no toxic chemicals and no messy paper cleanup. This stuff is amazing and it works every time!
What we’ll cover:

- Creating a smooth wax surface for easier transfers
- Choosing and preparing your photographs
- Transferring images with water
- Using specialty paper for consistent results
- Creating drawings to transfer directly onto wax
- Working with commercial transfer papers
- Transferring text and handwriting
- Choosing which technique is best for your project
- Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Protecting and sealing your transfers
